  • When is the best time to plant?

The best time to plant can depend on the type of tree being planted.  Generally, bare root trees are best planted at the beginning of the growing season.  Bareroot trees must be kept dormant until just (72hr) before planting.  We have large coolers that we are able to store trees in to keep them dormant until the time of you project.  This extends our planting season by a few weeks.  Allowing us to be more flexible with your schedule.  Potted trees can be planted at any point in the growing season, but many wait until the end of the season when temps are a little cooler to minimize watering needs.  Potted trees need just as much attention and care as bare root when planting and after, but being kept in potting soil with regular water and sunshine allows them to be kept longer before planting.  As long as they are given a few weeks before the ground freezes to establish roots, they will do well.

  • What trees can I plant that deer will leave alone?

Red cedar, spruce, buttonbush, walnut, larch, pine, redwood, alder, bayberry, bearberry, bittersweet, chokeberry, cotoneaster, elderberry, lilac, birch, winterberry. Of these Spruce, Ponderosa Pine and Lilac are some of the best choices for most of North Dakota.

You may also choose to plant your rows and protect them for at least the first 5 years.  after which they should be hardy enough to withstand open browsing if an occasional loss is acceptable.
